damp squib
«Сырой запал». Бизнес, который не принёс никакой прибыли, или что-либо, не достигшее своего воплощения, полного выражения. A squib (петарда, шутиха) — маленький фейерверк, который поджигают, а затем подбрасывают. Ясно, что предполагаемого эффекта не происходит, если запал сырой.
